Obesity has become an important health topic recently - the number of dangerously overweight people in the United Kingdom has trebled in 20 years. It is thought that over a third of people in the UK are overweight, and nearly a quarter are clinically obese! |
|
The reasons behind Britain’s obesity epidemic in the last decade go further than simply eating too much. It is not just a case of us eating much more than we did a generation ago; life is far less active than it has ever been before, with many of us not getting any more exercise than the short walk between the front door and the car. Recent studies have indicated that those living a century ago actually consumed more calories than we do today but due their more active lifestyles, those calories were easily justified.

What causes Obesity?
Being medically obese is defined as having a body mass index ratio of over 30.0. Weight-gain occurs when the number of calories that a person consumes each day is greater than the amount being used, resulting in an excess build up of unused calories. With no use for these calories, they are stored in the body as fat and over a long period of time can build up until the excess weight exceeds healthy recommended levels. In many cases, especially severe cases of morbid obesity, there are other contributing factors such as genetics and inherited traits.
