Coffee has become one of the most traded commodities in the world since it was first discovered in the 15th century and every day millions of people consume the caffeinated drink. As a result, dozens of specialist coffee makers have appeared across the globe offering unique blends and flavours. In the end however, it all boils down to the humble coffee bean itself.

And it’s the green unprocessed coffee bean that has garnered new attention as scientists have reported that they can substantially decrease body weight in a relatively short amount of time.

This follows a recent study that involved 16 overweight and obese subjects who took tablets containing the extract for a total of 22 weeks. A placebo was used at the same time to compare results and provide a stable control for researchers to get a more accurate representation. All of the individuals who took part in the study were monitored in terms of their diets, calories consumed, as well as the amount of exercise conducted. Both remained constant during the time period to ensure results would rely only on the function of green coffee beans for weight loss.

Those that participated lost on average 17 pounds during the 22 week period, including a 16 percent decrease in body fat. The results are significant and could provide people who are suffering from obesity or excessive weight, a further safe form of weight loss assistance.

“Based on our results, taking multiple capsules of green coffee extract a day -- while eating a low-fat, healthful diet and exercising regularly -- appears to be a safe, effective, inexpensive way to lose weight,” said Joe Vinson, Ph.D. from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. In his opinion it’s based on a substance found in unprocessed green coffee beans, called chlorogenic acid, which is usually broken down during the roasting process.

Previous studies have presented similar information but this was the first to test several different dosage levels of green coffee bean extract, between 700mg and 1,050mg, including the first to gauge responses from the higher quantities. Green coffee bean extract is already available in the United Kingdom but generally marketed as an anti-oxidant rather than a weight loss treatment. This study reaffirms that the extract may assist people lose weight effectively and safely, while making lifestyle and dietary changes too.
