How does the medication work?

Champix contains the active ingredient varenicline tartrate which is a nicotine receptor antagonist. This satisfies your urge for a cigarette. Nicotine also boosts your production of the feel good chemical, dopamine. Champix varenicline acts in a similar way by increasing the amount of dopamine produced by your body. This helps to lower your cravings for cigarettes.

By attaching itself to your neural receptors, it also blocks any of the chemicals that reach your brain when you smoke. This means that when you do smoke, you will not experience any of the pleasure you normally get from smoking.

Who is suitable to take Champix?

This medication is suitable for people over the age of 18 who wish to give up smoking. However, it is not suitable for you if you are pregnant, epileptic, have impaired kidney function or a history of psychiatric illness such as depression.

How do I take Champix varenicline?

You should start your smoking cessation treatment by setting a date to give up smoking. You need to start taking Champix a week before this date. This will help Champix varenicline to build up in your system so that when you do finally quit, you won't feel withdrawal symptoms from the very start.

Champix varenicline comes in two different doses: 0.5 mg and 1 mg. You will normally be advised to start by taking the 0.5 mg pill for the initial three days of your treatment. Thereafter, take two 0.5 mg pills for the next four days. This will complete the first week of your treatment. After this, take the 1 mg pill twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) for the remaining 11 weeks.

Are there any side effects?

Champix varenicline can cause some side effects for a small number of users. The most common side effect is mild, transient nausea. Other side effects may include headaches, insomnia, abnormal dreams, sleepiness, dizziness, changes in taste, dry mouth, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, flatulence, restlessness and skin irritation. In most cases however, these side effects disappear shortly after you start the treatment.
