Could fitness boot camps help to fight obesity?

To put things into perspective, health experts are predicting that 12 million adults will be obese come mid 2010. On top of this, 1 in 4 children are diagnosed as obese before they even reach the classroom.

More pressingly, coronary heart disease, a condition closely associated with obesity, has now been classified as the largest single cause of death in the UK.

A person is classified as obese, in the event they have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. A BMI is calculated with the use of height to weight ratios.

Recognising that we as a nation are in need of action, one fitness instructor, Andrew Meyers; pioneer of Remarkable Fitness UK, has come up with an innovative way in which to incorporate the benefits of physical exercise, with the discipline required to maintain a healthy weight. He also believes his unique exercise regimes are ideal for making make sure that any lifestyle adjustments are kept up. Acknowledging the fact that finding the discipline and drive to get into shape and improve our lifestyles is far from easy, he developed a series of boot camps, known as Riverside boot camps.

Anybody who enrolls on the camps are given the opportunity to participate in a series of physical exertions such as fat burning, muscle endurance and conditioning exercises.

Andrew also works closely with the clients, to work on stamina and fitness levels with the use of a variety of exercises.

“Whilst the term boot camp comes with harsh connotations, it is really about helping the client, to achieve their optimum fitness and to improve their health levels.” Meyers also believes that these boot camps are ideal for breaking the monotony of the everyday and to explore new boundaries. The London born fitness expert tells us he is currently putting together a series of courses over the coming months and urges anybody who is looking for effective fitness, nutritional and conditioning advice, to get in contact through his website.

The problem of obesity

Health experts worldwide subscribe to the idea that physical exercise and a balanced diet is the first port of call when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and Riverside Boot camps are undoubtedly an extension of this. Whilst the government has launched a number of campaigns to help control child obesity levels, more needs to be done to fight obesity, particularly as around 46% of men in England and 32% of women are overweight.
