Female Viagra discovered by accident
November 18, 2009 | FSD
A decade on from the accidental discovery of the revolutionary Viagra drug, proven to enhance erections and increase virility, a new version has been uncovered for women. The progressive drug; fibanserin was also discovered indirectly. It had initially been developed as an anti depressant. However, it was found to increase female sex drive without any sexual stimulation.
Subject to 3 trials all in all, the findings were presented to experts in Lyon, France. Heading the studies was Professor John Thorpe of the University of North Carolina. He deemed fibanserin to be an extremely poor anti depressant although “astute observers noted that it increased libido in laboratory animals and human subjects”. – BBC, 09.
The women that were involved in the study took 100mg of the drug once a day, for the treatment of a low libido. The majority reported a significant increase in sexual arousal and satisfaction.
"It's essentially a Viagra-like drug for women in that diminished desire or libido is the most common feminine sexual problem, like erectile dysfunction is in men” said Thorpe.
The study was funded by manufacturers; Boehringer Ingelheim, and it looked at 2,000 women in the US, Canada and Europe.
