Good-bye 2007 and 7.6 million Cancer Deaths
Like at the start of every year we can reflect on all the events of the past year and, like always, it is safe to say that there were good things as well as bad things. One bad thing that happened is, in spite of smoking ban introduced in several parts of the world, the death toll due to smoking remained high.
Warnings about the Dangers of Smoking - Are They Being Ignored?
We are all aware that millions of people worldwide die due to smoking related causes every year. Government and health agencies take action to combat this problem; scientists and researchers come up with latest drugs for smoking cessation and discover the hidden problems that smoking can cause. Perhaps all this falls on deaf ears as smoking continues to play a major part in causing cancers and deaths worldwide.
Worldwide Cancer Deaths in 2007
The American Cancer Society estimated last year that there would be 7.6 million deaths from various types of cancers in 2007 with lung cancer caused by smoking uppermost on the list. In all, 975,000 men and 376,000 women was predicted to die of lung cancer (mainly caused by smoking).
Predictions for 2008
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, projects 12.3 million cancer cases in 2008. The same report indicates that about 20,000 people die of cancer every day worldwide, with smoking related lung cancer being a major contributor.
If we want to see some changes this year, we have to take personal liability to counter problems of smoking and lung cancer. Let us begin 2008 in a healthier and more responsible way. If you smoke or know anybody who does, try to find treatments and solutions for it. There are already prescription medications available for those who wish to quit smoking; it is now our responsibility to get it and take first step towards smoking cessation. |
