Smokers have one more reason to quit smoking now. Hair loss and smoking have been found to be inter-related and it is now confirmed that smoking triggers hair loss. If you are a smoker contemplating smoking cessation, this could provide the ultimate motivation for doing so...
Smoking can Lead to Hair Loss
We all know that smoking can lead to a variety of diseases such as cancers, emphysema, chronic bronchitis to name but a few. If this was not enough, a new study shows that smoking also causes hair loss in men. Hair loss, which is a matter of concern for most men, has been said to have an indirect negative impact on their career and relationships.
Hair loss was primarily thought to be caused due to hormonal and genetic factors but Dr. Matthew Doppelt of Southeastern Dermatology Consultants said that smoking too can play a part in causing baldness. He said that smoking may also affect circulation in the scalp in very much the same manner as it affects circulation of blood through the body. Smoking may destroy hair follicles, interfere with the way blood and hormones are circulated in the scalp or increase the production of estrogen.
What do did the Studies Say?
A study that included 740 men (average age of 65) showed that cigarette smoking causes moderate to severe hair loss in men who smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day. Although it varied from case to case.
One More Reason to ditch the Habit
With the findings of this study, one more problem is added to the already long list of hazards relating to smoking. Smokers have one more reason now to stop smoking. With prescription medications available to help people quit smoking easily and painlessly, men do not have many excuses to delay smoking cessation.
