Pub landlord in prison for 'flouting' smoking ban
March 2, 2010 | Smoking
A pub landlord has been jailed for six months, for ‘flouting’ the smoking ban in 2 of his pubs. The conviction means he is the first person in the UK to receive a prison sentence for ignoring the smoking ban.
43 year old Nick Hogan from Chorley had not been able to keep up with the weekly payments of £125 a week. He had incurred the penalties after it was alleged that he hosted a ‘light up day’ in 2 of his pubs, the day the ban was introduced.
The events had taken place simultaneously in the Swan and the Barristers in Bolton. Hogan was fined £3,000 on top of £7,136 in court costs. His wife, 53 and also from Chorley claims that he hadn’t been an active campaigner against the large scale smoke cessation initiative which was introduced across the UK and parts of Europe.
Since the smoking ban was imposed, we have seen a large number of smoking cessation campaigns, ads and initiatives. Particularly poignant, was an ad that was published in Egypt. It depicted a wilting cigarette, symbolising the direct link between smoking and impotence. The ad caused a great deal of controversy.
Smoking – a real problem
Smoking has fast become a global killer and one of the most prevalent causes of preventable deaths, worldwide. 1 in 3 people smoke in particular areas of the UK and although this is heavily dependent on socio economics, there is a major need for better education concerning the very real dangers of smoking.
Anybody in need of help with their smoking cessation efforts are advised to seek the help of a trained health professional. There are a number of proven medications including Champix. Always speak to your doctor before beginning any treatment.
