If you think depression and anorexia do not have an influence on your sex life, think again. If you suffer from psychiatric disorders such as anorexia and depression, there are chances that your sex life is going to suffer. A number of factors cause female sexual dysfunction and now two more causes have been added to the list.
A small study suggests that psychiatric disorders, anorexia and depression, can affect a woman's sex life. Research has shown that women with mental health conditions, including major depression and eating disorders, tend to report more problems with their sex life than other women do. Researchers found that women with either anorexia or depression typically had problems during sex.
According to the research led by Dr. Frances A. Carter of the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Otago University in New Zealand, anorexia and depression have similar effects on a woman's sex life. It was found that these two conditions have more negative effects on a women's sex life than childbirth, which is usually a time in a woman's life where desire for sex seem to diminish slightly..
Case Studies
The study results are based on questionnaire responses from 76 women who had taken part in three previous, separate studies and included 10 women with anorexia; 24 women with major depression; and 42 women who had given birth within the past two months. All of the women were married or in stable relationships.
Carter's team found that 80 percent of women with anorexia and 79 percent with depression, said they had sex in the past two weeks, compared with only 50% of the new mothers. Furthermore, none of the women in the postnatal group had any problems during sex, while roughly one third of those with anorexia or depression did.
Female sexual dysfunction is lately recognised as a major sexual problem among women and numerous causes of it are being researched. With this new study, findings of which have been published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, two possible new causes have been added to the several already known.
