What are the benefits?
Simvastatin has been proven to effectively lower and control high cholesterol, helping prevent the condition from developing into stroke, heart attack, coronary heart disease or heart complications in those with diabetes. It does this by lowering LDL (‘bad cholesterol’) levels while stimulating production of HDL (‘good cholesterol’). This means that cholesterol is less likely to build up in arteries and cause any potentially damaging obstructions. Simvastatin has also been proven to lower triglyceride numbers in blood.
How does it work?
Simvastatin lowers the level of bad cholesterol in the blood by preventing the actions of a specific liver enzyme. HMG-CoA reductase enzyme is responsible for the production of LDL, but if not enough LDL is produced in the liver because its actions are blocked; it can cause an imbalance between the LDL being transported in your blood and the liver. This imbalance results in the liver extracting LDL from the blood to correct the inequality, resulting in lower LDL levels in the blood with the potential to block arteries.
Who can take it?
Most people can use Simvastatin for the treatment of high cholesterol, but it is not advised if you have a history of liver or kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorder or you drink more than two units of alcohol a day. Simvastatin should not be used during pregnancy as it can harm the baby and therefore breastfeeding when using this medication is also not advised.
There are medications with which this cholesterol medication should not be used, which include cyclosporine, danazole, nefazodone, antibiotics like azithromycin, HIV or AIDS medications or antifungal treatments. These medications can prevent Simvastatin from leaving the body resulting in serious muscle problems.
How do you take it?
As the body most actively produces cholesterol at night when we are sleeping, one tablet should be taken at the same time every evening.
What are the side effects?
All prescription medications have potential side effects, although these are generally mild if experienced at all. Side effects of Simvastatin may include anaemia, pins and needles, headache, a feeling of weakness, gut disturbances or rash and itching.
Any side effects that persist or grow worse, or serious side effects, should be reported to your doctor immediately. They may recommend a lower dosage or a different high cholesterol medication.
