Vardenafil (INN) belongs to a class of drug called PDE5 inhibitor used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It can assist men with erectile disorders like achieving and maintaining an erection during sexual activity. Vardenafil pills are potent erectile dysfunction pills and have entered phase 3 clinical trials. Vardenafil is commonly marketed under the brand name Levitra.

How Vardenafil pills work?

Vardenafil pills do not directly cause an erection of the penis, but it alters the body’s response to sexual stimulation by enhancing the effect of the nitric oxide, a chemical that is normally released during sexual stimulation.

Nitric oxide causes relaxation of the muscles in the penis, which allows for better blood flow to the penile area. Thus, Vardenafil helps you achieve erection.

Are Vardenafil pills been clinically tested?

Vardenafil pills are novel selective phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor and were assessed in several large-scale trials. In one such particular trial, a total of 601 men with mild to severe erectile dysfunction (ED) joined in this multi-centre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 12 weeks of treatment. The patients were on placebo or 5, 10 and 20 mg of Vardenafil pills were given to them.

According to International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF), the efficacy of Vardenafil pills was tested on two major domains. Primary endpoints were vaginal penetration and maintenance of erection. The results of Vardenafil were outstanding. In both the IIEF domains, Vardenafil pills showed a success rate of up to 80%. After only three Vardenafil pills; 71% to 75% of patients had successful vaginal penetrations and 80% patients experienced radical improvement in erections. The success rate of placebo was only 30%.

Most frequent treatment-emergent side-effects of Vardenafil pills were headache (7-15%), flushing (10-11%) and up to 7% for dyspepsia or rhinitis.

Vardenafil pills - Precautions

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Vardenafil pills exactly as prescribed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Vardenafil can be taken with or without food. Vardenafil pills should be taken not more than once in a day. have allergy to Vardenafil pills or to any ingredient of Levitra
have or had heart problems
have low blood pressure or have high blood pressure that is not controlled
have had a recent stroke or a stroke in the past
you or any family members have a rare heart condition known as prolongation of the QT interval
have liver problems
have kidney problems and require dialysis
have ever had severe vision loss
have retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic eye disease
have stomach ulcers
have a bleeding problem
have a deformed penis shape or Peyronie’s disease
have had an erection that lasted more than 4 hours i.e. Priapism
take any medicines called “alpha blockers” (alpha blockers are sometimes prescribed for prostate problems or high blood pressure)
have blood cell problems, such as sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma or leukaemia

Do not take Vardenafil pills if you:

take any medicines called “nitrates”
use recreational drugs called "poppers" like amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate
have been told by your healthcare professional not to have sexual activity because you have health problems

Vardenafil pills can cause your blood pressure to drop suddenly to an unsafe level if it is taken with certain other pills such as nitrates and alpha-blockers, and recreational pills that contain nitrates called "poppers". A sudden drop in your blood pressure could cause you to become dizzy, faint, or have a heart attack or stroke.
