9 Signs That You're Not That Healthy

If you break your leg it's obvious that's something's wrong, but when you have itchy skin and you're tired, you may just dismiss it. But stop! Your body is telling you something. Just because it doesn't speak English, doesn't mean it isn't talking sense.

Here are a few signs that you are not 100% healthy.

You Can't Sleep

It's not quite that feeling you got as an 8 year old on Christmas Eve, but more like an adrenaline fuelled night of misery. Levels of cortisone, the adrenaline hormone, are high when stressed, meaning you can't drift off. Less sleep means your body doesn't repair itself well.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Don't celebrate - you should only lose weight if you are trying to, or you've overhauled your diet. Unexplained weight loss can indicate diabetes, cancer or autoimmune disease - all kinds of nasties. If you've lost 10% of your body weight in the last 6 months, see your GP.

Your Poo Has Changed

Always check your bowel movements. It's not the world most exciting task, but it'll show you how your body is functioning. Black tarry poo, traces of blood, persistent diarrhoea, constipation or sudden urges to go need investigation. It may only be a haemorrhoid but its best to be safe.

You're Always Tired

Perhaps you eat properly and get enough sleep but you're still tired. It could be a sign you are depressed, anaemic or have thyroid problems.

Dry, Itchy and Flaky Skin

This could be eczema, psoriasis or allergies. Skin is your body's largest organ. If it isn't looking or feeling great it's trying to tell you something. If you spot moles, crusty scabs or any skin changes you need to see your GP for a skin cancer check.

You're Apple-Shaped

You're apple-shaped if you carry weight around your stomach rather than around your hips and thighs - that's pear-shaped. If you are apple-shaped, it's not because you've been eating too many apples, it means you probably need to shift some Kit-Kat poundage. Apple-shaped folk are more at risk of heart disease, so it's worth shedding the extra weight. That includes the love handles, so your partner will have to make do without.

You Have Cracked Lips

We all get these after a walk in the wind, or when we wake up with a stinking hangover, but if your lips are always cracked in the corners it could indicate a lack of B vitamins or oral thrush. Try some oral thrush treatment and some multi-vitamins - they won't hurt you.

You Have Odd Shaped Nails

Nails often show up illness. A horizontal line may mean poor nutrition, so improve your diet. Spoon shaped nails may mean anaemia and brown tips can indicate kidneys problems. Don't cover your nails with polish all the time because they are excellent health detectives.

Flashes of Light

Sudden light flashes don't mean you've seen Jesus, but can indicate migraine or a detaching retina.

If you have these symptoms, you'll need to start looking after yourself a bit more. See your GP, sort out your diet, get some exercise and you might prevent these little symptoms turning into big problems.
