What is the Mycoplasma Genitalium treatment pack?

The Azithromycin/Doxycycline treatment pack is used specifically to treat mycoplasma genitalium, which is a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

It is a combination pack containing two different antibiotics, which when taken together can effectively treat the infection.

The pill pack contains separate tablets. The treatment starts with 7 days of taking Doxycycline, followed by 3 days of Azithromycin.

How does it work?

Individually, Azithromycin and Doxycycline can be used to treat a variety of health conditions.

But when used together, they are most effective at treating mycoplasma genitalium (MGen).

MGen is caused by a bacterium. The treatment works by stopping the bacteria causing the infection to grow and multiply.

Once the antibiotics have stopped the infection from spreading, your body’s immune system can then kill the mycoplasma genitalium bacteria at its source. This clears you of the infection.

How do I take it?

Azithromycin and Doxycycline are taken as capsules/tablets, which you swallow with water.

The course of antibiotics is 10 days long in total. The treatment pack contains:

  • 14 x Doxycycline capsules (100mg)
  • 4 x Azithromycin tablets (500mg)

Below is a guide on how to take the treatment correctly over the 10-day course of antibiotics:

For the days on which you are taking Doxycycline, you must take each dose 12 hours apart. Take the first 100mg capsule in the morning and the second 100mg capsule at night.

Make sure to continue taking treatment for the full 10 days, even if your symptoms have gone away.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember (as long as it is within a few hours).

Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one. Instead, continue the course of antibiotics as normal - you will finish one day later than planned.

Am I allergic to the treatment?

In rare cases, you might get an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in this treatment.

Signs of an allergic reaction include:

  • a skin rash
  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • swelling of the mouth, tongue, or throat
  • a tight chest

If you think you might be experiencing an allergic reaction, stop taking the treatment immediately and seek emergency medical assistance.

Please note: Some versions of azithromycin tablets might contain soya, which could be unsuitable for those with soya or nut allergies. Always read the list of ingredients before starting treatment.

What are the possible side effects?

As is the case with all medications, you might experience some side effects when taking Azithromycin and Doxycycline.

The most common side effects of each drug include:

Azithromycin Doxycycline
  • diarrhoea
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • vomiting
  • skin reactions
  • sensitivity to light (sunburn)
  • headaches / vision problems
  • nausea / stomach pain
  • loss of appetite

If you do experience any side effects it is likely that they will be mild, and will only last for the duration of the treatment. Consult your doctor if you have any persisting side effects.

For a full list of side effects for both medications, please read the patient leaflet included in your treatment pack. You can also view it virtually on the left-hand side of this page.

What are the precautions?

You should tell your doctor if you are taking any other medication before starting this treatment.

Azithromycin and Doxycycline can interact with other medicines and could become less effective when taken alongside other treatments.

You could also increase your risk of side effects by taking MGen treatment whilst on other medication.

It is also advised that you do not drink alcohol whilst on this course of antibiotics.
