What are the benefits this medication?
One of the main benefits of Azithromycin is this medications ability to be able to cure most infections in a single high dose. Taking it in a single dose also means that it’s less likely to cause lasting side effects. This medication is also able to treat more than one non-gonococcal infection at a time, which is very helpful, as some STIs tend to flourish alongside others.
How does it work?
Azithromycin attacks the bacterial cells responsible for infections directly, influencing their ability to produce proteins that are integral to their survival. If the bacterial cells aren’t able to keep themselves alive, they can’t produce, which causes them to die off, stopping the infection.
Who can take it?
Azithromycin is generally well tolerated, but as with all prescription medications, it may not be right for everybody to take. So it’s important that you mention to your doctor if you have any existing medical conditions or if you are currently taking any other medications. People who are generally not advised to take Azithromycin are those who have been diagnosed as having an abnormal heart rhythm or who have inhibited kidney function.
How do you take it?
To treat penile/vaginal chlamydia, Azithromycin should be taken in a 500mg dose on day one, then 250mg once daily for four days preferably on an empty stomach. However, Doxycycline is a more effective treatment option for ano-rectal chlamydia. It's advised that you take both treatments if you are experiencing symptoms of both.
To treat a ureaplasma urealyticum infection, a single 1000mg dose is suitable.
To treat a non-specific urethritis or mycoplasma genitalium infection, a single 500mg x 4 dose is required.
To treat a gonorrhoea infection, a single 1000mg dose of Azithromycin should be combined with a treatment of Cefixime for successful treatment.
When taking this medication, alcohol should be avoided for up to 48 hours after taking it. If you are currently taking a hormonal oral contraceptive, you should consider taking additional contraceptive measures as Azithromycin may affect the cover your contraception would normally provide.
What are the side effects?
Side effects aren’t usual, but if they do occur, they are normally mild and don’t last long, because treatment is so short. Common side effects are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, fatigue and loss of appetite. Contact a doctor straight away if you experience any more serious side effects, if these effects persist or if you start developing an allergic reaction.
