Azithromycin

To treat a non-specific urethritis or mycoplasma genitalium infection, a single 500mg x 4 dose is required.

To treat a gonorrhoea infection, a single 1000mg dose of Azithromycin should be combined with a treatment of Cefixime for successful treatment.

When taking this medication, alcohol should be avoided for up to 48 hours after taking it. If you are currently taking a hormonal oral contraceptive, you should consider taking additional contraceptive measures as Azithromycin may affect the cover your contraception would normally provide.

Side effects aren’t usual, but if they do occur, they are normally mild and don’t last long, because treatment is so short. Common side effects are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, fatigue and loss of appetite.
