What is ellaOne?
ellaOne is an emergency contraceptive pill that can be taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after you have had unprotected sex, or when your contraception has failed, to prevent pregnancy. Women must be aware that ellaOne is more effective the earlier it is taken. ellaOne modifies the activity of the natural hormone progesterone which stops your ovaries from releasing an egg. This pill has a 98% success rate and can be taken if you have forgotten to take your regular contraceptive pill, or the morning after pill on time. A prescription for this emergency contraceptive can be issued to you after you complete an online consultation with one of our licensed doctors.
Who can take ellaOne?
ellaOne is completely safe for most women to take. If you are breast feeding you should leave 36 hours following the consumption of ellaOne before breast feeding again. You should not take this contraceptive pill if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if you think you may already be pregnant.
Some medications that are used to treat epilepsy, HIV and bacterial infections, as well as herbal remedies used to treat depression and anxiety, can make ellaOne less effective at preventing pregnancy.
Emergency contraceptive pills should only be taken in an emergency. You are advised not to take more than one ellaOne pill during the same menstrual cycle. For further information and advice about long term methods of contraception, please contact your GP.
How do I use ellaOne?
Swallow 1 tablet no later than 5 days (120 hours) after you have had unprotected sex, or you have failed to take your usual contraceptive. ellaOne can be taken at anytime, with or without food. You can also take the ellaOne emergency contraceptive pill at any point in your menstrual cycle. If you vomit within 3 hours of taking ellaOne, you should contact your doctor to discuss whether a second dosage is advisable.
ellaOne will not be effective if you have unprotected sex after you have taken the tablet. It is strongly advised that you use a reliable contraceptive method if you are sexually active. If you are currently using contraceptive pills, you can continue to take them as normal immediately after taking the ellaOne emergency contraceptive pill. Likewise, you can also take the morning after pill as normal immediately after taking ellaOne. However, until your next period, you should continue to use a condom to protect against an unwanted pregnancy.
It is important to remember that ellaOne is just a contraceptive; it will not protect you from any sexually transmitted diseases.
Does it cause any side effects?
You may experience mild bouts of dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision and have difficulty concentrating after taking ellaOne. There has been no conclusive evidence of users suffering from serious harmful side effects even when taking several ellaOne tablets at once, although this practice is strongly advised against. If you require any further information regarding ellaOne, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
