Mounjaro is a prescription weight loss injectable. It was initially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Weight loss was found to be a common side effect, and therefore has since been developed and licensed to treat obesity.
It works by reducing your appetite, which helps you consume fewer calories. Alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased exercise, it can help you lose weight gradually.
It is available as pre-filled injection pens that you use once weekly. Each pen contains 4 doses. After each pen, you may increase the dose if suitable until you reach the maximum maintenance dose.
Mounjaro works by reducing your appetite. This means you eat fewer calories and, alongside a lower–calorie diet, will help you to lose weight.
The active ingredient is Tirzepatide which is a GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist. It belongs to the same family of drugs as Saxenda (Liraglutide), Wegovy and Ozempic (Semaglutide).
It works on two hunger hormones: GLP-1 and GIP. This is unique compared to other weight loss treatments like Saxenda and Wegovy which only affect GLP-1.
This combined effect helps you lose weight by:
Along with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise regime, these mechanisms will help you gradually lose weight.
Mounjaro has many benefits when it comes to weight management.
It is an effective and simple-to-use treatment for weight loss.
Mounjaro is available as injection pens called KwikPens. You inject them once weekly. Each pen contains 4 doses.
After each pen is finished, you may increase the dose if suitable.
Each pack of Mounjaro comes with a full set of instructions and diagrams in the patient information leaflet.
Before you use your KwikPen, you need to prepare the needle to make sure it works.
You can inject this medicine into your stomach, thighs, or the back of your upper arms. You can inject it yourself, or another person can help you do this. |
|
Pull the pen cap off and inspect the pen and label to ensure you have the right medicine and dose. Check the pen for any signs of damage, and if you find any, refrain from using it. Mounjaro should be colourless to slightly yellow. |
|
Wipe the red inner seal with a swab. Choose a new pen needle and pull off the paper tab. |
|
Put the capped needle onto the pen and twist it on until it is secure. Pull off the outer needle shield and keep it aside (this will be reused). Then pull off the inner needle shield and throw this away. |
|
To prime the pen, turn the dose knob until you hear 2 clicks and the extended line is shown in the dose window. Priming the pen removes air from the cartridge and makes sure it’s working correctly. |
|
Hold your pen with the needle facing upwards and gently tap the cartridge holder. Release some medicine into the air by pushing the dose knob in until it stops, then slowly count to 5 while still holding it. The ‘0’ icon must appear in the dose window. |
Whilst preparing the pen, if you notice any fault, do not use the pen.
Once you have prepared the dose, you are ready to inject Mounjaro.
Turn the dose knob until a ‘1’ icon appears in the dose window. Insert the needle into your skin and push the dose knob in until it stops, then slowly count to 5 while holding the dose knob. Before removing the needle, make sure the ‘0’ icon appears in the dose window. Pull the needle out of your skin. |
|
Place the outer needle shield back onto the needle, then unscrew the capped needle and put this into a sharps container. Put the pen cap back onto the pen and store it appropriately. |
You can get someone to help you inject Mounjaro if you need to.
Throughout your treatment, you will gradually increase the dose. There are 6 Mounjaro doses: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.
The starting dose of Mounjaro is 2.5mg. You will take this dose once a week for a minimum of 4 weeks. Then, you may increase the dose to 5mg. You will increase the dose every 4 weeks until you reach the maximum maintenance dose of Mounjaro which is 15mg.
If at any point you experience side effects, you may stay on the current dose or decrease your dose as necessary.
If you forget to inject Mounjaro, and it has been:
You should allow for a minimum of 3 days between 2 doses.
Store Mounjaro pens in the refrigerator (2-8°C).
You may store Mounjaro unrefrigerated (not above 30°C) for up to 30 days. After 30 days, it must be discarded.
Keep it out of sight and reach of children.
Needles must be discarded in a yellow sharps bin. You will be provided with a sharps bin when you order online from OnlineClinic.
Once your sharps bin is full, you will need to contact your local council so they can collect them and dispose of them.
The pen itself can be disposed of at your local pharmacy.
Do not throw away the needles or pens with your regular household waste or put them down the toilet.
Like all prescription medicines, Mounjaro may cause side effects.
