Dianette contraceptive pills are part of the combined pill family, meaning they are taken over 21 days of the 28-day cycle with a seven-day break where you will experience a withdrawal bleed. This also means Dianette contains oestrogen and works by mimicking your natural cycle. Whilst being nearly 100% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly, Dianette also has a whole host of other benefits:
These benefits mean that Dianette can be used as more than a contraception, and can, in fact, be used for all these reasons as well.
|Short facts about Dianette|
|How to take||
Dianette is a combined contraceptive and therefore taken over 21 days of the 28-day cycle followed by a seven-day break. During these 7 days, you will experience a withdrawal bleed (period).
|How it works||
Dianette works in 3 ways to prevent conception; by stopping an egg from being released, by altering the womb lining so an egg cannot attach and thickening cervical fluid making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg.
Dianette should be taken at around the same time everyday for maximum effectiveness. When used correctly, it is around 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
Dianette comes in just one dosage, which is 2mg of cyproterone acetate (oestrogen) and 35mcg of ethinylestradiol (progestogen). Every pill has the same amount of hormones making Dianette a monophasic combined pill.
Side effects are unlikely and tend to be temporary, especially when your body is beomcing used to the hormones, however these can include headaches, an upset stomach, breast tenderness, low libido and irregular bleeding.
Dianette works like any other combined pill at effectively preventing pregnancy, in three different ways that offer over 99% protection when used correctly. Firstly, it tricks the body into thinking you have already ovulated, therefore your ovaries don't release an egg. No egg for the sperm to fertilise equals zero conception. If by a small chance an egg is released, the Dianette combined pill can also alter the womb fluid, making it thicker, so the sperm can't reach it. Lastly, the womb lining (wall) is also altered so an egg has extreme difficulty in attaching itself so the sperm can fertilise it.
Dianette is classed as a monophasic pill, which means each pill has the same amount of hormones in it. This means you can take Dianette in any order instead of following a strict day-by-day scenario that other contraceptives require.
When first buying Dianette, if you take your first pill on the first scheduled day of your period, then you will be immediately 99% protection against pregnancy when used correctly. If you start taking Dianette on any other day of your cycle, doctors recommend using barrier contraceptives for seven days after.
Many women find taking their pill first thing in the morning or last thing at night to be most effective as you are less likely to forget than taking in the day when something comes up. If you forget to take one pill, you will still be protected, however a couple or more could diminish effectiveness. For more information, check out our combined pill page.
If you experience diarrhoea or vomiting when taking Dianette, this can also mean effectiveness lessen, as the pill may not have been absorbed fully into your system. You can follow the same 'missed pill' protocol if this happens.
Dianette is available in one dosage; 2mg of oestrogen (cyproterone acetate) and 35mcg of progestogen (ethinylestradiol), with every pill containing exactly the same amount of hormones. This dose is highly effective whilst posing minimal risk of side effects.
Dianette has some side effects to take into consideration before buying, although most women experience none whatsoever, or manageable and temporary effects if they do. Side effects can include headaches, spotting (irregular bleeding), nausea, breast tenderness and a decrease in sex drive. There are also rare side effects associated with Dianette detailed in the patient leaflet attached to the bottom of this page.
In addition to side effects, below are the precautions to consider before tasking Dianette. This includes if you have, have had or are:
Dianette requires a consultation before ordering so do reveal your medical history and current medications to make certain this combined pill is the best contraceptive for you.
Whilst Dianette has many benefits, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Barrier contraception, male and female condoms, should be used if you are uncertain.
