Wegovy 25mg tablets, the first GLP-1 weight-loss tablet licensed in the UK.
Short answer

The Wegovy pill is semaglutide in tablet form, taken once a day instead of being injected once a week.

The MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026, making it the first GLP-1 weight loss tablet licensed in the UK.

In its main trial, the Wegovy pill produced an average weight loss of 13.6% over 64 weeks, which is close to what the 2.4mg Wegovy injection produces.

The trade-off is a stricter daily routine: The pill has to be taken on an empty stomach, with a small sip of water, and nothing else for at least 30 minutes afterwards.

Before you read on

If needles are the reason you've held back from starting a weight loss treatment, this is probably the update you've been waiting for.

It's also worth knowing what the Wegovy pill is and isn't.

It isn't a milder or gentler version of the medication.

It's the same drug, at a dose designed to give roughly the same effect in your bloodstream.

The side effects are much the same, too.

But, here’s what changes.

No weekly injection, no refrigeration, no ice packs, no sharps bin.

Instead, a small pill first thing in the morning and a 30-minute-wait before your first cup of tea.

Curious? This guide outlines all you need to know the Wegovy pill, including what it is, how much weight does it help to lose, how to take it, dose schedule, side effects, and more.

Where the Wegovy pill stands in the UK right now

The MHRA authorised Wegovy 25mg tablets on 11 June 2026.

The UK was the first country in Europe to license an oral GLP-1 for weight management.

Three things follow from that:

  • It's a licensed UK medicine. It has a UK marketing authorisation and a published Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC), the same as any other prescription medicine on our shelves.
  • It's available on private prescription. NICE has an open appraisal of oral semaglutide for weight management and has not yet published its decision.
  • It carries a black triangle. That symbol means the medicine is under additional safety monitoring, which is routine for anything newly licensed. It isn't a warning sign. The injection pens carried it, too. It simply means the MHRA wants every suspected side effect reported through the Yellow Card scheme so the picture builds quickly.

Did you know

Semaglutide has existed as a tablet in the UK for years, sold as Rybelsus.

But Rybelsus is licensed only for type 2 diabetes, at much lower doses (3mg, 7mg, and 14mg).

It is not licensed for weight loss, so our prescribers will not issue it for that purpose.

If you want semaglutide in tablet form for weight management, the licensed product is the Wegovy pill.

We take the same position on Ozempic, and we explain why in Mounjaro vs Ozempic.

What the Wegovy pill actually is

It's semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, pressed into a small pill.

Semaglutide mimics a gut hormone called GLP-1, which your body releases after you eat.

That hormone signals your brain to eat less and slows how quickly your stomach empties.

The practical result is that you feel full sooner, stay full longer, and think about food less.

Getting a molecule like semaglutide to survive the stomach is the hard part, and that’s why the pill took so long to arrive.

To solve this problem, Novo Nordisk combined semaglutide with an absorption helper called salcaprozate sodium, usually shortened to SNAC.

The SNAC protects semaglutide from stomach acid long enough for it to cross the stomach lining and get into the bloodstream.

Absorption happens in the stomach, and it only works well when the stomach is empty.

Food, drink, or other tablets sitting in there at the same time get in the way.

Here's the good part

Because absorption doesn't depend on temperature, the tablets don't need refrigeration.

They can be stored in their blister pack at normal room temperature, away from direct sunlight, with a three-year shelf life.

Wegovy pill vs Wegovy injection: What actually changes

While the Wegovy pill and the Wegovy injection contain the same active ingredient, their mechanism of action and weight loss results are quite different.

Here’s a head-to-head comparison between the pill and the injection, so that you can choose your option wisely.

If you’re considering semaglutide for reducing the risk of a further heart attack or stroke, the 2.4mg injection is the product with that specific UK licence and NICE recommendation behind it.

We cover that in detail in Wegovy and heart health.

Foundayo, the second tablet, and how it differs

On 10 August 2026, the MHRA authorised a second weight loss tablet, orforglipron, sold as Foundayo, manufactured by Eli Lilly.

The UK is the first country in Europe to approve this pill

So in the space of two months, the UK has gone from zero licensed weight loss pills to approving two of them.

Semaglutide is a peptide that the stomach acid breaks down, which is why the Wegovy tablet needs the SNAC absorption helper and all the fasting rules that go with it.

Orforglipron is a small molecule, so it survives digestion on its own.

This means there’s no eight-hour fast, no water limit, no thirty-minute wait, and no fixed time of day to take this pill. You take it when you like, with food or without.

How much weight did people lose in the OASIS 4 trial

In the trial for the Wegovy pill, called the OASIS 4, followed 307 adults with obesity, or with overweight plus a weight-related condition for 64 weeks.

Every participant also followed a well-balanced diet and performed adequate physical activity.

A bar graph showing the results of the clinical trial for teh Wegovy pill 25mg dose

Average weight loss at 64 weeks:

  • Wegovy 25mg pill: 13.6% of body weight
  • Placebo: 2.2% of body weight
  • 76.3% of participants lost at least 5% of body weight
  • 59.8% of participants lost at least 10% of body weight
  • 47.0% of participants lost at least 15% of body weight
  • 27.5% of participants lost at least 20% of body weight

Average waist circumference fell by 12.2cm, and 26% of participants finished the trial with a BMI below 30.

Among those who started with prediabetes, 71.1% of participants taking the Wegovy pill had normal blood glucose by the end, compared with 33.3% of participants taking a placebo.

For context, the 2.4mg Wegovy injection produced 14.9% average weight loss over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial.

The pill lands in similar territory.

The higher-strength 7.2mg injection and Mounjaro both produce larger average losses, and we compare all of them in Mounjaro vs Wegovy.

One honest caveat about the evidence.

OASIS 4 was a relatively small trial, with 307 people, and the participants were mostly women and mostly white.

It also had no head-to-head comparison against the injection, so any pill-versus-injection comparison is drawn across separate trials rather than measured directly.

How to take the Wegovy pill

Here is how you need to take the once-daily Wegovy pill:

  1. Take the pill first thing in the morning, after not eating for at least 8 hours (an ordinary night's sleep covers this).
  2. Swallow it whole with a sip of water. No more than half a glass, roughly 120ml.
  3. Don't split, crush, or chew it. Breaking the pill may affect its absorption.
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating any food, drink, or other tablets or capsules.
  5. Take only one pill a day. Two smaller pills do not add up to a bigger dose, and taking them that way isn't safe or effective.

Quick tip

The 30-minute wait is the bit people find hardest, mostly because it collides with the morning cup of tea.

The practical fix is to keep the blister pack on the bedside table, take the pill before getting up, and take a shower and dress up in the next 30 minutes.

By the time they are in the kitchen, the 30 minutes would have passed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, skip that dose completely and take your next one at the usual time the following morning.

Don't double up to make up for the missed dose.

Wegovy pill dosage schedule explained

The Wegovy pill comes in four doses: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg.

Each dose lasts for at least four weeks before the next increase.

The dose escalation is gradual to allow your body to adjust to a new dose and its side effects in a comfortable manner.

Here is the entire Wegovy pill dosage schedule:

Month 1

1.5mg once daily

The starting dose. Low on purpose to let your gut get used to the medicine.

Month 2

4mg once daily

The first dose increase. Side effects tend to reappear briefly around each increase, then settle gradually.

Month 3

9mg once daily

Most people notice a reduction in appetite and weight loss at this dose.

Month 4+

25mg once daily

The maintenance dose, and the one that the trial results are based on.

Your prescriber may ask you to continue on this dose for a long term if you’ve lost sufficient weight by this point and you’re able to tolerate this dose well.

How to switch from Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill

If you're already on the 2.4mg weekly injection, the switch is more straightforward than you might assume.

The product licence allows patients on 2.4mg weekly injections to move straight onto 25mg pill, with no need to start again from scratch.

You take your first tablet one week after your last injection, on the day the next injection would have been due.

Two things to keep in mind:

  • Absorption from pills varies more between people than absorption from injections. Two people on the same pill dose can end up with noticeably different absorption in their blood, which is why taking it exactly as directed matters more here than it does with a pen.
  • If you're on the 7.2mg injection, this isn't a like-for-like swap. The 7.2mg Wegovy injection is a higher dose than the pill reached, so moving across may mean a step down in effect. That's a conversation to have with your prescriber before you decide.

You can start a switch from Wegovy injection to Wegovy pill through your OnlineClinic account, and a GMC-registered prescriber will review whether it's appropriate for you before anything is dispensed.

What are the side effects of taking the Wegovy pill

Like any other GLP-1 medicines, most side effects are gastrointestinal in nature.

Most of the side effects are at their peak around the dose increases, and they settle gradually.

If you want to learn more about Wegovy injection’s side effects, check out our guide on Wegovy side effects week by week.

Here's what was reported over 64 weeks in the OASIS 4 trial.

Very common side effects (more than 1 in 10 people)

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Indigestion
  • Headache
  • Stomach ache
  • Tiredness

Indigestion turned up more often with the pill than it does with the injection.

Common side effects (up to 1 in 10 people)

  • Acid reflux
  • Burping
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Gastritis
  • Dizziness
  • Altered taste
  • Gallstones
  • Hair loss

Uncommon or rare side effects

  • Inflamed pancreas, gallbladder inflammation, or kidney stones
  • Faster heart rate or low blood pressure on standing
  • Severe allergic reaction and swelling under the skin
  • Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a rare eye condition affecting the optic nerve

When to stop and get help urgently

Some symptoms need same-day attention rather than a wait-and-see approach. Stop taking the Wegovy pill and get immediate help if you experience:

  • Severe, persistent stomach pain, particularly if it spreads to your back and comes with vomiting. This can signal inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Sudden loss of vision, even partial, in one or both eyes.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Call 999.

If you're having any procedure under general anaesthetic or deep sedation, including dental work, tell the team you're taking semaglutide.

Because the medicine slows stomach emptying, food can still be present when the anaesthetist expects an empty stomach.

Any side effect you suspect can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, and doing so genuinely helps.

Who the Wegovy pill isn't suitable for

You might not be eligible to take the Wegovy pill if you:

  • Are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. Semaglutide should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy, because it stays in your system for five to seven weeks after the last dose.
  • Are under 18.
  • Have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide before.
  • Have severe kidney impairment or severe liver impairment.
  • Have severe gastroparesis, where the stomach already empties too slowly.

Speak to a provider if any of this applies to you:

  • You have a history of pancreatitis, diabetic eye disease, gallstones, or type 2 diabetes treated with insulin or a sulfonylurea.

If you could become pregnant, you'll be advised to use contraception while on treatment.

Semaglutide doesn't appear to interfere with the combined pill's absorption in the way tirzepatide can, and we cover this in detail in Mounjaro and contraception.

Drug interactions with Wegovy pill

Because the pill needs an empty stomach to absorb well and it slows digestion, it interacts with other oral medicines more than the injection does.

Tell your prescriber about every medicine you take, including anything bought over the counter.

This includes:

  • Levothyroxine. Taking it alongside Wegovy pill raises thyroxine levels. If you're on thyroid replacement, your thyroid levels should be monitored, and your prescriber may suggest moving your levothyroxine to a different time of day.
  • Warfarin and similar anticoagulants. More frequent INR checks are recommended when starting semaglutide.
  • Any other tablets or capsules. Several tablets in the stomach at once cut semaglutide absorption by roughly a third. This is exactly why the 30-minute wait after taking the pill helps.
  • Insulin and sulfonylureas. These carry a low blood sugar risk that semaglutide can increase, so doses often need lowering at the start.

Reassuringly, no meaningful interaction was found with metformin, digoxin, furosemide, omeprazole, or combined oral contraceptives.

Choosing between the Wegovy pill, injection, and Mounjaro

There's no single right answer when it comes to choosing the right medicine and form for your weight loss treatment, and your prescriber's view of your medical history matters more than any general rule.

That said, the practical picture usually looks like this.

The pill might be ideal for you if:

  • You are scared of injecting needles into your body
  • You are more comfortable with a daily pill than weekly injections
  • You already have a settled morning routine for the daily pill
  • You want semaglutide and don't need the cardiovascular licence

The injection might be ideal for you if:

  • You have established cardiovascular disease, and you need a weight loss medicine with the UK licence and NICE recommendation
  • A once-weekly injection routine fits your life better than a once-daily pill requires
  • You might struggle with taking a pill on an empty stomach or busy mornings.

The 7.2mg Wegovy injection or Mounjaro might be ideal for you if:

  • You're prioritising the largest average weight loss the trials show
  • You've been on semaglutide before and want more effect than you got
