Two injection pens Wegovy and Mounjaro placed on a wooden table
Short answer

Yes, you can switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro, and it is a common move.

Because they are different medicines, you start Mounjaro at its lowest dose (2.5mg) even if you were on the maximum Wegovy dose.

The usual pattern is simple: Take your last Wegovy injection, leave a gap of about a week, then take your first Mounjaro dose on your normal injection day.

In trials, the 15mg Mounjaro dose produced greater average weight loss than the older 2.4mg Wegovy dose, which could be one of the major factors for people deciding to switch.

Whether it is the right move for you depends on why Wegovy stopped suiting you, your medical history, and what your prescriber advises.

Who this guide is for

If you are reading this article, you have probably already been on Wegovy for a while.

You know what a weekly injection feels like, you have been through the early side effects, and you have a reason for thinking about making a switch.

Maybe the weight loss has slowed.

Maybe you never quite got the result you hoped for.

Maybe you simply want to try the option that promises better results in the trials.

Whatever the reason, you are not starting from scratch, and this guide is designed for someone just like you.

It covers how the switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro actually works, what happens to your body when you switch, and what to expect when you make the switch.

However, this guide is not a recommendation to switch. That decision is made with a GMC-registered prescriber who can see your full medical history.

What has changed, and why it may affect your decision

Before you decide to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro, there are a couple of recent developments to consider.

Wegovy’s maximum weekly dose is now 7.2mg

The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) approved a 7.2mg maximum weekly dose for Wegovy in 2026.

That is roughly three times the old 2.4mg dose, and it helps lose upto 19% weight loss compared to the 15% weight loss that the 2.4mg dose offered.

Note:

The SURMOUNT-5 trial compared weight loss results between Mounjaro’s 15mg dose and Wegovy’s 2.4mg dose, not the new 7.2mg dose.

So, if you are basing your decision to switch to Mounjaro on the SURMOUNT-5 trial, you might want to reconsider, as the difference in weight loss results between the two medicines now is smaller than expected.

Wegovy is now available as an oral pill

Since July 2026, Wegovy has been available as a once-daily oral pill.

It is available in four doses: 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg, and 25mg.

In the OASIS-4 clinical trial, Wegovy pill has delivered 13.6% weight loss in 64 weeks.

If you are not comfortable with once-weekly injections, you can safely transition to the pill.

Why do people switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro

There can be several reasons for wanting to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro. Some of the most common reasons are:

  • Weight loss plateau: The scales stopped moving on the maximum Wegovy dose, and it has stayed that way for weeks.
  • Not enough weight loss overall: Wegovy worked, but not to the degree that was hoped for, even at the maximum dose.
  • Wanting a better alternative: Mounjaro tends to produce greater average weight loss in trials, and some people want to give that a try.
  • A different tolerability picture: A minority of people find one medicine sits better with them than the other.

Did you know

Mounjaro works on two of your gut's appetite hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), while Wegovy works on one (GLP-1).

That second hormone is the main reason Mounjaro tends to produce slightly more weight loss on average.

How Wegovy and Mounjaro actually differ

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are GLP-1 receptor agonists (they both mimic the GLP-1 hormone in our bodies) and do a similar job: both medicines reduce appetite, slow how quickly your stomach empties, and are available as once-weekly injection.

But, there are some key differences that usually make people switch:

Feature Wegovy Mounjaro
Active ingredient Semaglutide Tirzepatide
How they work Mimics the GLP-1 hormone Mimics both GLP-1 and GIP hormones
Dose range 0.25mg to 7.2mg (for the injection)
1.5mg to 25mg (for the oral pill)
2.5mg to 15mg
Average weight loss Around 15% at 2.4mg (STEP-1 trial)
Around 19% at 7.2mg (STEP UP trial)
Around 13.6% at 25mg oral pill (OASIS-4)
Around 20.9% at 15mg (SURMOUNT-1 trial)
Heart licence Has a UK licence and a NICE recommendation for reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke in certain patients Does not have a UK heart licence for this indication
Starting cost From £69.99 for the 0.25mg dose as well as 1.5mg Wegovy pill From £139.99 for the 2.5mg dose

Our complete Mounjaro vs Wegovy comparison guide covers the entire side-by-side comparison in depth.

Wegovy vs Mounjaro: What the head-to-head trial showed

The clearest evidence on the two medicines comes from SURMOUNT-5 trial, the first trial to test them directly against each other.

SURMOUNT-5 (tirzepatide vs semaglutide)

A bar graph comparing the percentage of weight loss achieved by Mounjaro and Wegovy in a 72-week clinical trial

The trial included 751 obese participants, who were either given tirzepatide (Mounjaro) or semaglutide (Wegovy) for 72 weeks.

Average weight loss at 72 weeks:

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide): 20.2%
  • Wegovy (semaglutide): 13.7%
Note:

Trial averages are averages: Some people on Wegovy lose more than the Mounjaro average, and some people on Mounjaro lose very little. Individual responses may vary.

Switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro: A step-by-step process

Switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro is not a complicated process. You just need to follow some simple instructions, and you’re good to go.

  1. Take your last Wegovy injection as normal, then safely discard the pen.
  2. Leave a gap of about one week. This means you skip Wegovy on your next dose day and let the semaglutide clear from your system.
  3. Take your first Mounjaro dose at 2.5mg on your usual injection day. This is the standard starting dose for everyone.
  4. Step up gradually from there, following your prescriber's plan (more on the schedule below).

One firm rule: Do not take Wegovy and Mounjaro in the same week or run them together. They are stopped and started, not overlapped.

Quick tip

Write down the date of your last Wegovy injection and the date of your first planned Mounjaro dose, so the one-week gap is easy to keep track of.

Set a weekly phone reminder for the same day each week.

Most people find pairing the injection with a fixed weekly habit makes it far easier for them to remember to take the dose on time.

If you and a prescriber decide the switch is right for you, you can start a free consultation, and we will confirm your changeover plan before anything is dispatched.

There is no rush, and no charge if treatment is not issued.

Why should you start Mounjaro at the lowest dose

If you were on the maximum Wegovy dose, starting Mounjaro at 2.5mg can feel like going back to square one.

But, it is worth understanding why starting from scratch is a deliberate decision rather than just caution.

There is no official dose-equivalence between the two medicines.

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are different compounds, and there is no manufacturer chart that says "your Wegovy dose equals this Mounjaro dose.”

Because of that, the standard, evidence-backed approach is to begin Mounjaro at 2.5mg regardless of the Wegovy dose you finished on.

This lets your body get used to the second hormone (GIP) present in Mounjaro, which Wegovy never introduced, and it keeps early side effects manageable.

Some specialist prescribers may occasionally judge that a slightly higher start is appropriate based on how well you tolerated Wegovy.

That is a clinical decision for the prescriber, not something to attempt yourself. So, it’s best to talk to your prescriber before trying anything yourself.

The reassuring part

Starting from scratch on Mounjaro does not mean starting over.

The appetite-reducing effect you built on Wegovy does not vanish in a week, and you are not losing the progress you made.

Starting on the lowest Mounjaro dose is about introducing the new hormone (GIP) gently, not about winding you back to day one.

Most people move up the doses without much trouble.

Dealing with the side effects during the switch

We’ll be honest, some of the early side effects you dealt with on Wegovy can return as you build the Mounjaro dose back up.

Nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite, and the occasional bout of constipation or reflux may resurface.

But it is only because your body is getting used to the new medicine and the new dose, and your stomach is emptying more slowly.

Here is the difference for you specifically. Because your body already knows the GLP-1 effect from Wegovy, the effect from dose change and escalation on Mounjaro is often milder and shorter.

The new element that’s being introduced to your body is GIP, so you might notice a slightly different pattern of stomach symptoms than you had on Wegovy.

It usually settles within the first few weeks of each new dose.

Here are a few practical things that may help deal with the side effects:

  • Eat smaller meals, since a slowed stomach makes large meals uncomfortable.
  • Go easy on very high-fat foods in the first weeks of each new dose.
  • Keep your fluids up, because constipation is common.
  • Tell your prescriber if a side effect is not easing, since holding at a dose for an extra cycle often resolves it.

We cover the full timeline in Mounjaro side effects week by week.

Here's the good part

You have done this before.

The weekly injection, the gradual step-ups, the early-week nausea that fades: none of it is new to you.

Most people who switch say the second time around felt far less daunting than starting Wegovy did, because the routine was already familiar.

The injection technique is almost identical, and our step-by-step Mounjaro injection guide covers the small differences.

Mounjaro dose schedule after switching

Once you have started the 2.5mg Mounjaro dose, you follow a steady step-up pattern.

Mounjaro is available in six different doses: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg, and 15mg.

You stay on each dose for at least four weeks before moving up, which gives your body time to adjust each time.

You do not have to climb to 15mg.

The right maintenance dose is the lowest one that gives you steady progress with side effects you can live with, and that varies from person to person.

The full dose schedule is explained in our Mounjaro dosage schedule guide.

What changes when you switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro

Switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro is easy. However, there are two major caveats to keep in mind before you decide to switch.

You may need to swap your oral contraceptive pill

Mounjaro can reduce how well your body absorbs the combined oral contraceptive pill, particularly when you start, and each time the dose goes up.

Wegovy does not carry this warning.

If you take the oral contraceptive pill, you need to either switch to a non-oral method of contraception or add a barrier method (such as condoms) for four weeks after starting Mounjaro and for four weeks after every dose increase.

To understand the limitations and the alternatives in greater detail, check out our guide on Mounjaro and contraception.

You will not get Wegovy's heart health benefits

The honest part

Switching to Mounjaro means leaving behind something Wegovy has that Mounjaro does not: A UK licence and a NICE recommendation for reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with established cardiovascular disease. Our guide to Wegovy and heart disease explains the cardiovascular evidence in more depth.

Mounjaro does not currently hold a UK heart health licence.

If part of the reason you were on Wegovy was your heart health, that is a real trade-off that is worth thinking about.

It is one of the clearest cases where staying on Wegovy may be the better call.

Talk it through with your prescriber before you decide.

When staying on Wegovy might be the better choice

Switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro is an important decision. Rethink the switch if:

  • You have established cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 27 or above, where Wegovy's heart health benefit can help significantly.
  • You are tolerating Wegovy well and still losing weight steadily, in which case there may be no need to change.
  • You have not yet tried the newer Wegovy 7.2mg dose or the Wegovy pill, which may be a simpler next step than switching medicine entirely.
  • The contraceptive change on Mounjaro would be difficult for you to manage.

Who Mounjaro is not suitable for

Mounjaro might not be suitable if you:

  • Are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
  • Have had a serious allergic reaction to tirzepatide.

Discuss your eligibility for Mounjaro with a prescriber first if you:

  • Have a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease
  • Severe kidney or liver problems
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • A history of eating disorders
  • Take other diabetes medicines (particularly insulin).

To be eligible for treatment, you also need a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related health condition. If GLP-1 treatment is no longer right for you, our prescribers will let you know and explain why.
